Pampas Galeras
Full-Day Tour to Pampas Galeras National Reserve – Vicuñas & Andean Landscapes
Departure Time: Around 6:00 AM
Duration: Approximately 10–11 hours
Location: About 90 km (56 miles) northeast of Nazca
Access: Paved and dirt roads – suitable for most vehicles
Step into the high Andes and discover the Pampas Galeras National Reserve, a protected natural area dedicated to the conservation of vicuñas, the smallest and most elegant of the South American camelids. This full-day tour offers breathtaking scenery, Andean wildlife, and an authentic look into Peru’s highland ecosystems and traditions.
Leaving early from Nazca, the route climbs steadily toward the high puna, crossing scenic valleys and mountain passes. As you ascend to over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level, the landscape transforms into wide open grasslands where vicuñas roam freely in their natural habitat.
At the reserve, you’ll visit the Interpretation Center to learn about the biology, cultural importance, and protection of the vicuña. If visiting during the chaccu season (traditional shearing), you may even witness this centuries-old communal ritual.
You may also spot other wildlife like Andean foxes, eagles, or tarucas (Andean deer), as well as herds of alpacas and llamas raised by local communities.
Tour Includes:
Round-trip transport from Nazca
Bilingual guide specialized in ecology and local culture
Visit to the Interpretation Center
Light snacks and water during the trip
Recommendations:
Wear warm clothing – temperatures can drop below 10°C (50°F) even during the day
Bring sun protection (UV is strong at high altitude) and plenty of water
Light breakfast before departure recommended
